Ms. Sophia Chote SC is an Attorney-at-Law who was admitted to practice law in Trinidad and Tobago in 1989. She was appointed Senior Counsel by the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago in 2011 and is the Head of Chambers of Alpha Chambers of Trinidad and Tobago.
Ms. Chote is an alumnus of King’s College London of the United Kingdom and the Hugh Wooding Law School of the Council of Legal Education. She started her career as a prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before entering private practice. She continues to conduct private prosecutions and also appears as Defence Counsel. She is primarily a litigator who has appeared in hundreds of criminal law matters and who has practiced law at all levels of the judicial system in Trinidad and Tobago.
Ms. Chote’s areas of specialised expertise include criminal law, immigration law, human rights law, constitutional and public law and civil law. She has served as a Temporary Judge of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago and sat as a member of the Law Reform Commission and the Advisory Committee on the Power of Pardon. During the period September 2015 to August 2020, Ms. Chote was appointed by the President of Trinidad and Tobago to serve as an Independent Senator of the Parliament of the Republic.
Ms. Chote is the current President of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago. She has also served as an executive member of the Criminal Bar Association of Trinidad and Tobago and Course Director of Criminal Practice and Procedure at the Hugh Wooding Law School. She also wrote a weekly column for the Trinidad Express Newspapers for several years.
